A sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of four distinct stages. Each night, healthy adults pass through 4-6 of these cycles. The proportion of time spent in each stage changes throughout the night -- early cycles contain more deep sleep (N3), while later cycles contain more REM sleep.
