What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you have a healthy amount of body fat. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg divided by m squared). How is BMI Calculated?

The BMI formula is straightforward and uses only two measurements -- your height and weight.

Metric Formula: BMI = weight in kg divided by (height in metres multiplied by height in metres)

Imperial Formula: BMI = (weight in lbs divided by height in inches squared) multiplied by 703

Example: A person weighing 75 kg with a height of 1.75 m calculates: 75 divided by (1.75 times 1.75) = 24.5 BMI -- which falls in the Normal weight category. In imperial units, a person weighing 165 lbs at 5 feet 9 inches would calculate: (165 divided by 69 squared) times 703 = 24.4 BMI.

BMI Prime is a variant that divides your BMI by 25 (the upper limit of the normal range). A BMI Prime of exactly 1.0 means your BMI is precisely 25. Values below 1.0 indicate normal or underweight; values above 1.0 indicate overweight or obese. It is a useful way to express how close or far you are from the ideal range.

What is a Good BMI?

A good BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, classified as Normal weight by the WHO. However, the ideal BMI varies by population. BMI for Men vs Women

The WHO BMI categories and thresholds are the same for adult men and women. However, the health implications differ. Men naturally carry less body fat than women -- a man with a BMI of 25 typically has a body fat percentage of around 20-25%, while the equivalent for women is closer to 30-35%. BMI for Women

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful and convenient screening tool, it has well-documented scientific limitations that every user should understand:

  • Does not distinguish muscle from fat: Athletes and bodybuilders often register as overweight or obese despite having very low body fat percentages. This is BMI's most significant individual-level limitation. A rugby player at 90 kg and 1.78 m has a BMI of 28.4 (overweight) but may have only 12% body fat.
  • Cannot detect fat distribution: Visceral fat (fat around the organs in the abdomen) is far more metabolically dangerous than subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin).
