What is BMI?
BMI was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetevar as a population-level statistical measure, not as an individual health diagnostic. Despite being over 180 years old, it remains the global standard for weight screening because of its simplicity -- requiring only height and weight -- and its reasonably strong correlation with body fat percentage at the population level.

How is BMI Calculated?
The BMI formula is straightforward and uses only two measurements -- your height and weight.
Metric Formula: BMI = weight in kg divided by (height in metres multiplied by height in metres)
Imperial Formula: BMI = (weight in lbs divided by height in inches squared) multiplied by 703
Example: A person weighing 75 kg with a height of 1.75 m calculates: 75 divided by (1.75 times 1.75) = 24.5 BMI -- which falls in the Normal weight category. In imperial units, a person weighing 165 lbs at 5 feet 9 inches would calculate: (165 divided by 69 squared) times 703 = 24.4 BMI.
BMI Prime is a variant that divides your BMI by 25 (the upper limit of the normal range). A BMI Prime of exactly 1.0 means your BMI is precisely 25. Values below 1.0 indicate normal or underweight; values above 1.0 indicate overweight or obese. It is a useful way to express how close or far you are from the ideal range.

What is a Good BMI?
However, the ideal BMI varies by population. Research consistently shows that people of South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern descent face higher health risks at lower BMI values than people of European descent. For these populations, some experts recommend using lower thresholds -- for example, overweight starting at BMI 23 and obese at BMI 27.5 -- rather than the standard WHO cutoffs of 25 and 30.

BMI for Men vs Women
BMI for Men
The WHO BMI categories and thresholds are the same for adult men and women. However, the health implications differ. Men naturally carry less body fat than women -- a man with a BMI of 25 typically has a body fat percentage of around 20-25%, while the equivalent for women is closer to 30-35%. This means men with a normal BMI can still carry concerning amounts of visceral (belly) fat. BMI for Women
Women naturally have higher body fat percentages than men at the same BMI due to biological differences related to hormones and reproductive function. A BMI of 22-23 is often cited as optimal for women's health and longevity. After menopause, weight tends to shift from the hips and thighs to the abdomen -- which is more metabolically dangerous. BMI for Children and Teenagers
Standard WHO BMI categories do NOT apply to children and teenagers under 20. For young people, BMI is assessed using age and gender-specific percentile charts called BMI-for-age. Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful and convenient screening tool, it has well-documented scientific limitations that every user should understand:
- Does not distinguish muscle from fat: Athletes and bodybuilders often register as overweight or obese despite having very low body fat percentages. This is BMI's most significant individual-level limitation. A rugby player at 90 kg and 1.78 m has a BMI of 28.4 (overweight) but may have only 12% body fat.
- Cannot detect fat distribution: Visceral fat (fat around the organs in the abdomen) is far more metabolically dangerous than subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin). BMI cannot differentiate between these. A person with a normal BMI but large waist circumference may be at higher risk than someone with a higher BMI but healthy fat distribution.

- Ethnicity differences: South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern populations develop obesity-related health risks at lower BMI thresholds than European populations. Standard WHO cutoffs may underestimate risk in these groups.

How to Lower BMI Safely
If your BMI falls in the overweight or obese range, the evidence strongly supports gradual, sustainable weight loss over rapid approaches. Here is a scientifically grounded plan:
- Create a moderate calorie deficit: A deficit of 500-750 calories per day below your maintenance level produces 0.5-1 kg (1-2 lbs) of weight loss per week -- the rate most associated with long-term success and muscle preservation. - Add resistance training: Two to three sessions of strength training per week helps maintain muscle while losing fat, improving body composition even when total weight loss is modest. This also helps prevent the metabolic slowdown that comes with calorie restriction alone.
