How Reducing Sodium Lowers Blood Pressure
The evidence for sodium reduction and blood pressure is among the strongest in nutritional science. A landmark meta-analysis found that reducing sodium intake by 1,000mg per day lowered systolic blood pressure by approximately 5-6 mmHg in people with hypertension, and by 2-3 mmHg in people with normal blood pressure. These reductions translate to meaningful reductions in stroke risk (approximately 14%) and heart attack risk (approximately 9%).
