Pace is one of the most useful numbers in running because it lets you plan effort levels independent of a specific course. A target pace tells you exactly how fast to run regardless of whether you're on a track, a trail, or a treadmill, which is why coaches build almost all training plans around pace rather than raw speed or distance alone.
Minutes Per Kilometer vs Minutes Per Mile

The Race Time Predictor — How It Works

Why the Exponent Matters

Riegel's formula tends to be most accurate when predicting between reasonably similar distances — for example, using a 10K result to predict a half marathon time. It becomes progressively less reliable for very large jumps, such as predicting a full marathon time purely from a 5K result, since marathon performance depends heavily on endurance-specific factors like fueling strategy and long-run training that a short, fast race doesn't fully capture.

- Interval pace: Faster than race pace, run in short repeated efforts with recovery between, used to build speed and VO2 max
