How Is My Child's Adult Height Predicted?
This method has been used in pediatric practice for decades and remains a reasonable starting point precisely because it's simple, requires no special equipment, and captures the single biggest known factor in adult height — parental genetics. It is not, however, a precise prediction for any individual child, which is why the range matters just as much as the central estimate.
How Accurate Is This Prediction?
Most children's actual adult height falls within the calculated range, but individual results can and do fall outside it. Research on target height generally suggests around two-thirds to the large majority of children land within roughly one range-width of the predicted midpoint, with genetics explaining a large share — commonly cited at around 80% — of the variation in height within a population. The remaining variation comes from a mix of nutrition, overall childhood health, sleep, chronic illness, and other environmental factors during the growing years.

In the UK, national health data puts the average adult male at approximately 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) and the average adult female at about 163 cm (5 ft 4 in) — slightly taller on average than US figures, a pattern seen across several Northern and Western European populations compared to the US. Individual variation within any country is far larger than these national averages suggest, so these figures are useful context rather than a target.
