The 5 Female Body Shapes
What Is a Body Shape Calculator?
Understanding your body shape helps you choose clothing that flatters your natural proportions, select exercise programs suited to your physique, and understand health risks associated with your fat distribution. Body shape is determined by genetics, but changes with age, lifestyle, and body composition.
The 5 Fashion Body Shapes Explained
Hourglass — Bust and hips are roughly equal in size, with a clearly defined waist (at least 9 inches smaller than bust or hips). Considered the most "balanced" female shape by fashion standards.
Pear (Triangle) — Hips are significantly wider than the bust, often with a defined waist. The lower body is the widest point. Common in women and associated with lower cardiovascular risk than the apple shape.
Apple (Round/Oval) — The midsection carries the most width, with bust and hips narrower than the waist. Associated with higher cardiovascular risk due to central fat storage.
Rectangle (Banana/Straight) — Bust, waist, and hips are within 2 inches of each other, giving a straight, athletic appearance. Very common — research at NC State University found 46% of women fall into this category.
Inverted Triangle — Shoulders and bust are significantly wider than the hips, creating a V-shaped silhouette. Common in swimmers and women who do a lot of upper-body exercise.
The 3 Fitness Body Types (Somatotypes)
Ectomorph — Naturally slim, fast metabolism, difficulty gaining weight or muscle. Long limbs and narrow frame. Best results from heavy compound lifts and caloric surplus.
Mesomorph — Athletic build, responds quickly to both exercise and diet. Gains and loses weight relatively easily. Benefits from balanced cardio and strength training.
Endomorph — Rounder build, higher natural body fat, slower metabolism. Gains weight easily but finds fat loss challenging. Responds best to HIIT and a calorie-controlled diet.
How Body Shape Changes With Age
- Teens & 20s — Shape most defined by genetics; metabolism high, muscle tone natural
- 30s — Metabolism begins slowing; maintaining muscle mass becomes more important
- 40s — Hormonal changes begin shifting fat from limbs to abdomen; pear shapes may trend toward apple
- 50s (Menopause) — Estrogen decline accelerates abdominal fat accumulation; waist-to-hip ratio changes
- 60s+ — Muscle loss (sarcopenia) affects shape; body fat percentage tends to rise even at stable weight
This is why this calculator gives age-specific advice rather than one-size-fits-all recommendations. A 22-year-old pear shape and a 55-year-old pear shape need completely different exercise and clothing guidance.
Clothing Guide by Body Shape
Hourglass — Wrap dresses, belted styles, fitted tops, high-waisted bottoms. Avoid boxy or shapeless cuts that hide the waist.
Pear — Boat-neck tops, off-shoulder styles, A-line skirts, wide-leg trousers. Dark colours on the lower half; patterns and brightness on top.
Apple — Empire waist dresses, V-necks, flowy tops over fitted bottoms. Avoid tight waistbands and clingy fabrics around the middle.
Rectangle — Peplum tops, ruffled skirts, belted waists, layered looks. Create the illusion of curves with structured waist definition.
Inverted Triangle — A-line and flared skirts, wide-leg trousers, scoop or V-necks. Avoid padded shoulders and boat necks that add upper-body width.
