What Is Waist-to-Height Ratio?
Unlike BMI, which does not distinguish between muscle and fat or where fat is stored, WHtR specifically captures central obesity — fat around the abdomen and organs, which is metabolically more harmful than fat stored elsewhere on the body.

WHtR vs BMI vs Waist Circumference Alone
BMI — Uses only weight and height; does not account for fat distribution or muscle mass. A muscular athlete and a person with high abdominal fat can have the same BMI but very different health risks.
Waist circumference alone — A useful indicator, but does not account for the fact that a taller person can healthily carry a larger absolute waist measurement than a shorter person.
WHtR — Adjusts waist size for height, making it comparable across people of different heights. Multiple large studies suggest it correlates more strongly with cardiovascular and diabetes risk than BMI alone, and the simple "keep waist below half your height" rule is highly practical for everyday use.
Why WHtR Is Better Than Waist Circumference Alone
Waist circumference alone does not account for body size. A waist of 90 cm means something very different on a person who is 155 cm tall versus one who is 190 cm tall. WHtR solves this by dividing waist by height, making the number directly comparable across people of different heights, ages, and ethnic backgrounds.

Ethnic Differences in WHtR Risk
Research shows that people of South Asian, East Asian, and Middle Eastern backgrounds tend to carry more visceral fat at lower WHtR values compared to people of European backgrounds. For these populations, some cardiometabolic risk may begin at a WHtR below 0.5. If you are from one of these backgrounds, discuss appropriate personal thresholds with your doctor rather than relying solely on the universal cutoffs used in this tool.

What Visceral Fat Is and Why It Matters
Not all body fat carries the same health risk. Subcutaneous fat sits just under the skin and is relatively metabolically inert. Visceral fat wraps around internal organs in the abdominal cavity and is metabolically active — it releases inflammatory signals and fatty acids that raise blood pressure, impair insulin function, and increase the risk of fatty liver, heart attack, and stroke.
